Two Islands, One Weekend: Why the U.S. Virgin Islands Should Be Your Next Trip

Have you ever been to the U.S. Virgin Islands?

There are three of them (St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John) and I recently had the pleasure of visiting two: St. Thomas and St. John. So let me answer the question you're really asking.

Is it worth it? YES.

But here's the thing nobody tells you before you book: these islands are not interchangeable. Each one gives you something completely different. Show up expecting the wrong vibe and you'll spend your whole trip confused. Show up knowing what you're walking into, and you'll have one of the easiest, most restorative weekends of your life.

Here's what I learned.

St. Thomas: Beautiful, Walkable, and Not the Party You Think It Is

St. Thomas is gorgeous. The food is genuinely good, and depending on where you stay, you can walk almost everywhere, which is a rare luxury on an island.

Now let me save you some disappointment.

If you're picturing a Caribbean party island with bottle service, clubs until 4 a.m., and a different scene every night, St. Thomas is not that island. It's a lounging island. A long casual dinner island. A rum drink with your feet up and no plans for tomorrow island.

There are really only two places to go out at night:

1. The strip club. Yes, you read that correctly.

2. 758 Bar & Restaurant, where there's dancing on Saturday nights.

That's the list. And honestly? Once I stopped fighting it, the pace became my favorite part of the trip. St. Thomas isn't trying to keep you up. It's trying to slow you down.

Where I Stayed: The Pink Palm Hotel

I have to give this place its own section, because when I tell you it had everything, I mean everything.

The view? Beautiful. The service? Attentive in a way that felt genuine, not scripted. The food? Included, which took an entire category of decision making off my plate. And the property itself is a photoshoot waiting to happen. I don't think there's a bad angle on the whole place.

One honest note: it's on a hill. You'll know it every time you come and go.

It's worth it anyway. That view doesn't happen at sea level.

St. John: Go Straight to Trunk Bay

If you do one thing on this trip, do this: take the ferry to St. John and go to Trunk Bay.

I don't have a cool, understated way to describe this water. It's crystal blue and so clear it looks fake, like someone painted the ocean and forgot to make it believable. I stood there for a solid minute just trying to process it.

St. John has several beaches, and they're all beautiful. But Trunk Bay is the one I'd send you to, because it's the most set up for an actual full day:

• Chair rentals, so you're not sitting on a towel in wet sand

• Tents, because shade matters more than you think at that latitude

• Food available on site, so there's no need to leave and come back

You can show up with almost nothing and stay all day. That's what makes it the best one.

The Practical Stuff (Read This Part)

Here's what I wish someone had told me before I landed.

Carry cash. Seriously.

Taxis are how you get around on both islands, and taxis charge per person and per destination, not per ride. So a group of four going somewhere isn't splitting one fare. You're each paying. Budget accordingly, and keep cash on you.

Everything is a ferry away.

Island hopping is genuinely easy here. The ferries run regularly, and you have two options:

• Pre-book online if you want a guaranteed spot and one less thing to think about

• Buy your ticket at the terminal when you arrive, which worked fine for me

The ferry terminal also runs to Tortola.

If you want to add a stamp to your trip, there are ferries to Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. Just note that's a different country, so bring your passport if that's on your list.

So, Who Is This Trip For?

The U.S. Virgin Islands are a fantastic weekend destination. You don't need two weeks. You don't need a complicated itinerary. You need a few days, a swimsuit, and a willingness to do very little.

Go if you want to:

• Unwind without a long haul flight

• Eat well without dressing up

• Sit in water so clear it feels like a filter

• Come back to real life actually rested

Skip it if you want:

• A nightlife driven trip

• Constant activity and structure
