When I told people I was heading to El Salvador, the reactions ranged from curiosity to concern—most based on outdated headlines and misconceptions. But let me tell you: El Salvador is not just safe—it's stunning, welcoming, and incredibly affordable. After spending time exploring the country, I can honestly say I felt safer walking the streets of San Salvador at night than I do in a New York City subway.
🛬 Arrival & Getting Around: Rent a Car!
The first thing I did when I landed? Rented a car—and I’m so glad I did. Most of El Salvador’s top attractions are spread out, and having your own wheels gives you total freedom to explore at your own pace.
📍 Pro Tip: Download Waze—it works beautifully here and will make your road trip effortless.
🌆 San Salvador: The Underrated Capital City
I spent four days in San Salvador, and I genuinely loved every minute of it. The city is a mix of modern energy, rich culture, and surrounding natural beauty.
🍽️ Dining Like Royalty
One of the highlights? Eating at some of the city's best restaurants. I treated myself to dinner at Brutto—chic vibes, amazing service, and absolutely delicious food. Honestly, prices were shockingly reasonable for such a high-end experience.

🥾 Hiking a Volcano (and Ice Cream on Top!)
Of course, no trip to El Salvador is complete without a hike, and I decided to tackle one of the nearby volcanoes. The trail was amazing—different types of terrain kept things interesting, so comfortable shoes are a must. Once you reach the top, there’s a local vendor selling homemade ice cream. On a volcano! It was the perfect treat to cool down and soak in the views. Don’t miss it.
🌮 Street Food, Because You Gotta
You can’t travel to El Salvador and not try the street food. Whether it's pupusas on a street corner or grilled snacks by the roadside, everything I tried was fresh, flavorful, and safe. Don't be afraid to dive in—your taste buds will thank you.

🌊 El Tunco: Beach Vibes + Nightlife
After soaking in the culture and energy of San Salvador, I headed to the coast and stayed in El Tunco, a surfer-friendly beach town with chill vibes and great nightlife.
🏝️ Where I Stayed: Boca Olas Resort
I booked a few nights at Boca Olas Resort—and it was perfect. The rooms were comfortable, the breakfast was delicious, and it’s conveniently located near all the bars, cafes, and beach clubs. Whether you're looking to party or just relax, El Tunco delivers.

🧳 Final Thoughts: Don’t Sleep on El Salvador
El Salvador is a country that surprised me in the best way. It’s clean, safe, vibrant, and full of life. From volcano hikes to gourmet meals, beach sunsets to city nights, this place has so much to offer without the tourist crowds or high prices.
So if you’ve been curious but hesitant—go. Leave the outdated headlines behind. Explore with an open heart and an open mind. I promise, El Salvador will blow you away
