If you're heading to the beautiful Caribbean island of Bonaire, it's important to know about the mandatory Visitor Entry Tax—a government initiative aimed at supporting local infrastructure, tourism development, and environmental conservation. Whether you're coming for the diving, nature, or relaxing beaches, here’s what you need to know before you arrive. Non-residents aged 13 and older will be required to pay a $75.00 per visitor entry tax; residents of the former Netherlands Antilles and non-residents aged 12 and under will be required to pay $10.00 per visitor. The mandatory tax will be paid digitally via an online platform or upon arrival at the airport. I highly suggest paying the tax online to avoid the long line at the airport.
Why Rent a Car?
One of the first things to know is that Uber and Lyft do not operate on the island. While taxis are available, they can become expensive quickly—especially if you plan to explore multiple beaches, dive sites, or restaurants during your stay.
To save both time and money, I highly recommend renting a car during your stay. Having your own vehicle gives you the freedom to explore the island at your own pace—from the southern salt flats to the northern national parks.
During my recent trip, I rented a car from First Bonaire
Car Rental, and the experience was excellent:
✅ Fast and friendly service
🚐 Free airport pick-up and drop-off
💸 Affordable rates — around $200 USD for four days
🚗 Clean, reliable vehicles perfect for exploring the island
The team was professional, punctual, and made the entire rental process stress-free

Relaxation at Its Finest
Exploring Bonaire: A Hidden Gem for Scuba Divers, Foodies, and Beach Lovers
Bonaire may be a tiny island, but it packs a punch when it comes to natural beauty, adventure, and unforgettable dining experiences. Nestled in the Caribbean, this island offers the perfect blend of relaxation and excitement—and, trust me, it’s worth every penny, even if it’s a bit on the pricey side.
A Taste of Bonaire’s Best Dining Spots
Let’s talk food first. Bonaire is home to an impressive range of restaurants, but two places absolutely stole my heart. For dinner, It Rains Fishes serves up fresh seafood with a view that’s hard to beat. Whether you’re watching the sunset or just soaking in the island vibe, the experience here feels like a tropical dream. Breakfast? Number Ten is the spot. I’m talking about delicious, fresh options that will fuel your day—whether you're heading out for a dive or just relaxing on the beach.

And if you’ve got a sweet tooth like me, don’t miss Gio’s Gelateria. This place is cash only, but it’s 100% worth it. The gelato is creamy, dreamy, and the perfect way to cool off after a long day of exploring. Pro tip: All the other restaurants accept credit cards, so no need to worry about carrying cash unless you're stopping by Gio's!
Bonaire: A Diver’s Paradise (Or a Relaxer’s Haven)
Now, let’s talk about the adventures you can dive into on the island (literally, if you’re into scuba!). Bonaire is one of the best places in the world for diving—its crystal-clear waters and vibrant marine life are a dream for underwater enthusiasts. But even if scuba diving isn’t your thing, there’s still plenty to enjoy on land.
One of the best places to kick back and take in the sun is Ocean Oasis Beach Club. This spot has it all: delicious food, amazing drinks, a killer DJ, and fresh seafood right by the beach. Whether you’re there to vibe with the music or just want to relax in a lounge chair while watching the waves, Ocean Oasis is the place to be. Plus, the views? Unreal. It’s the ultimate combination of relaxation and fun.

Get Adventurous: Explore Bonaire’s Wild Side
For the adventurers, Bonaire isn’t just about beaches and sunsets—it’s got hidden gems like the Salina Goto salt flats and the chance to see wild flamingos in their natural habitat. The island’s rugged terrain and beautiful wildlife will have you feeling like you’re in a nature documentary. Whether you’re hiking, driving, or just taking it all in from a distance, the flamingos are a sight you won’t forget.
Final Thoughts: Worth the Investment
Yes, Bonaire can be a little pricey but trust me when I say it’s all worth it. From incredible restaurants to world-class diving and breathtaking views, the island offers a little something for everyone. Whether you’re looking to dive into adventure or just kick back with a cocktail by the beach, Bonaire’s charm will capture your heart in no time.
Cultural Experiences
Bonaire offers rich cultural experiences beyond its beaches. The island's capital, Kralendijk, is filled with colorful buildings, inviting local shops, and delightful restaurants.

Final Thoughts
Bonaire is a small island that impresses with its combination of adventure and relaxation. With pristine beaches, rich marine life, and welcoming locals, it offers a fantastic escape from everyday life.
Whether you choose to dive into crystal-clear waters, lounge on sandy shores, or immerse yourself in the island's culture, Bonaire promises a memorable experience. So, pack your bags, rent a car, and get ready to explore this Caribbean paradise.
With its delightful mix of relaxation and adventure, Bonaire is certain to create lasting memories and inspire a longing to return. Enjoy your adventure!
